The young star of a new musical based on the Bat Out Of Hell album says he wanted to be a sportsman until a serious mountain bike accident cut short his hopes.
Andrew Polec, 22, will step into Meat Loaf’s shoes when he stars in Jim Steinman’s Bat Out Of Hell — The Musical, which comes to the London Coliseum in June. It is the first major role for American Polec, although his career could have worked out very differently. He told the Evening Standard: “I got into a bad bicycle accident and it really changed my life.
“It happened when I was a teenager and I was really into sports. I was on a trail in Pennsylvania and was going really, really fast down a hill. I didn’t see a blind turn and there was a car right there. I hit my brakes but only the front worked, and I just blacked out. I was in a trauma unit for five days. I had a head injury so I guess the lesson of the day is wear a helmet. I got a concussion and at one point they thought I may not be able to walk again.
“They said I’d never be able to do contact sports again so I started looking for other avenues to put a lot of energy into. Music was one of them. My father played me Paradise By The Dashboard Light [from Bat Out Of Hell] and it changed the whole trajectory of my life.” The album was intended to be a musical before it was eventually recorded by Meat Loaf in 1977, going on to sell more than 50 million copies.

Polec plays Strat opposite Christina Bennington as Raven in the rock fantasy. It features 17 songs originally sung by Meat Loaf and two new ones. He added: “The role requires a lot of stamina and vocal capability to perform them anywhere near the way the legendary Meat Loaf did. I don’t think it’s daunting, but more exciting.”
