Here's an article I've shared before, from Newsday in 1963 when Jim won an essay contest. Contains a short blurb about him.

"James has a 94 average at Hewlett High School. He is on the school newspaper, plays piano in the orchestra, and likes tennis and the theater. English is his favorite subject. He has an older brother and his father, Louis, is a steel distributor. James hopes to enter college and wants to be a writer."

I don't know anything about his parents. The NYSF archives contain a telegram sent from Joe Papp to Jim in 1970 at an address in Hewlett. I won't post it because I don't know who lives there now, but it's a nice house (more than 6000 square feet).
