"I know you made your Broadway debut in Hello, Dolly!. How did you get your start before that?
Well, I graduated college a semester early because I hated it so much and I immediately got a job temping at Equitable Life Insurance. I started auditioning and the first thing I got was an off-off-Broadway show, a rock musical version of Wagner's Das Rheingold. It was just called Rheingold and it was totally bizarre. It was written by Jim Steinman and played at the Mercer Arts Theater, which fell down the day after we closed. There might have been something in the universe talking to us at that point. Then someone had seen me from the bus-and-truck of Two Gentlemen of Verona and they cast me in that. It was my first Equity show."

See link for full interview (don't know if the rest of it will be of any interest to anyone)
