Hey, it's me again. Let’s wheel out the Night Shift dead horse for some whipping, shall we? I saw that EJXD2 took a dig at me a few weeks back on this topic, which was funny. Thank you. I’m glad this whole thing hasn’t faded from everyone’s minds. I also saw that Jacquline has stated that the Night Shift album is "officially untrue," (see the “Band From The 90s” thread) though I'm not sure how to interpret that. I was recently cleaning out some old files and found a newspaper article (Santa Barbara Independent, July 30, 1991) about the lost Night Shift album. It is at this link: http://api.ning.com/files/0qkw8Ea4ZK7zO4G6TRwe7M7yfQuoBWA7G0ogBce0ixKUDQsD7JDigELtuX7D99HX2NcXDnWr6lVwOOUdo4lUHuWHNOsmFPbA/sidewaysmojo.jpg?transform=rotate(270) (I hope this works. I’ve had a devil of a time trying to find a place to host a pdf and finally had to get it converted to a jpg…)(whine whine whine) Here are my fragmented memories of the project: The singer of Night Shift was Richard Dunne, Jim's long-time friend who performed in the Kennedy Center version of Neverland. The guitar player from Night Shift was Dave Zeiher, the son of my high school Spanish teacher. Dave and I became friendly acquaintances. I met the keyboardist from Night Shift but I don't remember his name. (The keyboardist also programmed the syn drums and faux bass.) Dave told me that he was not involved in the recording of the Night Shift album, that it was Richard and Jim's usual session musicians. In 1993, after "Back Into Hell" was released (I remember Richard joking about the song “Anything For Love”), I was hanging with the band before a show and Richard told me he had a box of the newly pressed CDs at his house and he would give me one. But the hand-off never happened. I do not remember whether Richard or Dave (I think Dave, and I think it was Richard's divorce, but I wouldn't swear to it) told me later that someone's divorce had blocked the release, but I don't know the details. Night Shift stopped playing together shortly after that; Dave just said that Richard was bad at returning phone calls. Take it for what it's worth. Maybe someone should track down Richard and ask for his version of the story. Anyone here live in Santa Barbara? It’s a shame I could not include the remainder of the article; there was some neat stuff about great local bands like JD’s Last Ride opening for the Stray Cats, and Toad The Wet Sprocket before they hit it big. | |
