I've heard in years past that this is something that is frequently done with singers on live tours where it is generally a given that their voices would be tested under such conditions. It's been said in my presence by people who had experience with such things that the difference between singing for a studio take on a recording and singing live in an air-conditioned arena with the stress of travel and what else, that the singer's voice can't match the performance. It's been true, I've heard said, even of such great singers as Robert Plant, who was hoarse in the show I saw him at.

Using synchs, and backup vocals, seems to be a consistent trick of the trade. But Plant didn't use it. People complimented his effort to go out on stage and give it the try.
