"Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are", does not necessarily lend itself to the metaphysical, even though it does blend with both the physical/metaphysical, when the emotional life has bonds to the past in general, the past always seems to be up close and the bonds seem to be close, even though the chasm of distance is too wide to cross, or longer to cross than the actual illusion which such recollection creates.

In terms of physical, you can think of it whenever you have a friend to call, and either you pick up where you left off, in which case the illusion is shared, or you don't, in which case the illusion is one-sided. Either way, there is always the space in-between, that is a distance unaccounted for.

There is the negative side, when pains linger far beyond their period of incidence, and that pain keeps the distant past very close. In all aspects when you look at hindsight, you always see things closer than they are. It's Jimmy's insight which points that out.
