| Don't know if we have (m)any Dropkick Murphys fans here (Irish-steeped punk/folk/rock), but I heartily recommend their version of "The Green Fields of France." Its a cover, though I'm not familiar with the original (by Eric Bogle, I've learned, the "Waltzing Matilda" guy.) Anyway, its a very effective, moving ballad that starts at the grave of a WWI soldier and becomes a rumination on the futility of war. "and I see by your grave you were only 19 when you joined the great fallen in 1916 well I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean or Wille McBride, was it slow and obscene?" I'm pretty sure if I listen to this drunk, I'll be moved to tears, and to hug my fellow man immediately, maybe even grabbing his ass. Check it out if you're so inclined. | |
