Yes, he may never reach Steinman level of artistry. But I'd bet his songs reached the hearts of as many, if not more people than Jim. I think Desmonds strongest quality is his hooks. Damn near everything he writes is pretty catchy, but it can be forgotten as soon as it's heard. Jim's music is more timeless and can be enjoyed forever more (hence BOOH). Desmonds becomes dated five years after it's written, which makes it more nostalgic, not timeless.
It's nice that he still has a good relationship with Jon and Richie over the years. Bon Jovi doesn't use as much Desmond material as they used to, but he always has at least one track per album. I can't speak for the other artist, but he's always made it clear he wrote WITH Bon Jovi, not for them.
Come to think of it Desmond was kinda like the Timbaland of the 80's. Much of the stuff on the radio had his touch on it. As a rule Aerosmith's 'Angel' and 'What it Takes' always gets turned up at my house. ;)
