Knowing what someone describes as the rules is not the same as learning to play it as a kid yourself, and such is the American indoctrination to sports, or had been before Soccer/Football came into popularity. Those who are not bored by it, are pitching in their minds like a music fan plays air guitar to a recording. You wind up to a pitch, well, you know that's exciting stuff. The whole act of pitching is exciting. I love the pitchers, because they have to have such concentration, so much body agility, and just the right posture backed up by the power in their arm to make it happen. Winding up to a pitch is a ritual, you can watch it, as the pitcher is on the mound, you can watch his whole body move to the focus of his task ahead.
First, you have the ball in your hand, and you cup that ball between both of your hands and you address it...hello, ball, and you then take one arm, your pitching arm and you draw it back with the ball in it, and while you are doing that, you push your other arm forward and your pitching side leg back, and that's when you are ready to let the thing fly. You become like a bow, and the ball is your arrow, so you lean forward on your other leg, bend your knee just so, you you put all your power into propelling that ball towards the plate, the home plate, where your opposing batter is waiting to hit it....except you don't want him to hit it. You aim, to miss, and he aims to hit, and one or the other of you is going to get your way.
