Born Marvin Lee Aday outside Dallas Texas, in 1947, he was dubbed Meat by his dad when he was just three. Getting hooked on performing while in high school, his love for entertaining took him to Los Angeles, but Meat's career didn't take off until he partnered with songwriter Jim Steinman. Though rejected by most major record labels, 1977's Bat Out of Hell wound up becoming one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Fame took its toll on Meat, as he struggled with addictions and bankruptcy. By the mid-80s, he had to rebuild his career from scratch, and did so when in 1993 he earned a best vocal Grammy for the single I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That). | |
