| I've been meaning to post about this for ages and it's almost Jim-related in a not very Jim-related way at all, but what the heck. I've been listening to one of my favourite CDs a lot lately - "Myrmidons of Melodrama' by the Shangri-La's. I know Jim stated that they were of his inspirations for Pandora's Box (see it IS Jim-related after all!) but more than just the idea of 4 girls all singing, I hear so much in the production and the songs themselves that remind me of Jim. Probably everone has heard 'Leader of the Pack' - a motorcycle crash/death song didn't you know? - but it's the lesser known tracks like 'Remember (Walkin in the Sand)', 'Out in the Streets' and 'Train from Kansas City' that really stand out. The huge arrangements, vocal hamonies and just the clever construction really reminds of Steinman, probably moreso than Phil Spector's work of the same era does. How much must Spector have wished he'd had the Shangri-Las? Even the weird, almost gothic spoken-delivery of 'Past, Present and Future' is reminiscent of one of Jim's monologues and wouldn't have sounded out of place on Original Sin. Come to think of it, just about Shangri-La's track would have made for a better cover version than 'My Little Red Book', but maybe Jim thought that the comparison would have been too obvious. Anyways, that's it. Just a bit of rambling thinking aloud for everyone to read or ignore, as they choose. | |
