I never thought their albums sounded particularly alike, either, except for the Phil-Spectorish-ness, of course. I don't think Bad For Good sounds that much like Born to Run, either. Even such, just because you hear an influence, doesn't mean something was "lifted" per se. If Jim is a Springsteen fan, it makes sense he would be influenced. It's not a bad thing- all songwriters do it (Bruce too). What phrases in particular do you think Jim lifted? Don't forget also, of course the Roy Bittan connection. Roy is a big factor in how Bruce's music sounds. Jimmy Iovine also produced "Rock and Roll Dreams come Through" - he was a recording engineer on Born to Run. In terms of Born to Run, the title song was recorded before the rest of the album- that's why Roy and Max aren't playing on it. They weren't in the band yet. (It was David Sanscious on piano and Ernest "Boom" Carter on drums) Datewise, Bruce was playing live versions of Born to Run (the song) as early as 1974 (album was released in 75); I'm not sure when Jim wrote most of the songs on Bat. Besides Springsteen, I hear an Elton John influence as well. Compare Elton's "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock and Roll)" to Paradise; you can't help but hear it. Back to Bruce- interestingly, some folks think "Queen of the Supermarket" off of Bruce's new album sounds like Meat Loaf/ Steinman. What do you guys think, if you've heard Queen? | |
