| It looks like Sonnenberg's negotiation strategy didn't work out so well for Abdul on American Idol. It certainly sounds like David got a regrettable deal for Meat Loaf on Bat Out of Hell, but then again it was a first time record deal with material that wasn't entirely conventional and a lead singer who was seriously overweight. I'll admit that I suspect that David is a well-connected guy who sucks as a manager. Plus, I think that -- aside from the "synergy" created by their relationships -- managers suck in general. Some of them will take as much as a third of an artists "entertainment" based income regardless of whether they procured the job that led to the employment. Often an artist's agent or lawyer finds the work, the *business* manager does the accounting, and the "manager" provides them with introductions, PR, and advice on how to dress and crap. My limited understanding is that David procures employment and is involved in negotiating contracts. I think he should charge no more than 5% of the artist's entertainment related income and I think the legislatures of New York and California agree with me. In regards to the Black Eyed Peas, David may have helped with that success. But, there are a lot of other people on that team. The best thing about being a well-connected manager is that you get to work with artists and groups who are given the utmost in support from their label and are often surrounded by a great agent, lawyer, and support team. The sad thing is that the real test of how good David is in regards to the Black Eyed Peas probably isn't what kind of record sales they have, but what kind of deal they have with their label. It should be outstanding. If it isn't, David is probably selling out the Black Eyed Peas in order to further build his relationship with the label execs -- another good reason managers shouldn't be negotiating. You might also judge David's effectiveness by asking what he has done for Jim, lately. The Bat III settlement didn't seem all that amenable to Smeg and we haven't seen David's staple of artists covering Steinman songs left and right. Maybe Jim is sick or no longer interested in a lot of recording work because his creativity is taking him in a different direction, but I see no reason to praise David around this message board. As a note: I do *not* know David or Jim or Meat or the facts surrounding their agreements.
