From The Sunday Express:

“Saturday is the start of European Bat Weekend. Here are some bat facts:

Of all the mammal species in the world, almost a quarter are bats.

African heart-nosed bats have such a keen sense of hearing they can hear the footsteps of a beetle walking on sand 6ft away.

Vampire bats adopt orphans and have been known to risk their lives to share food with other less fortunate members of their species.

Ninety per cent of all the bats in the world are microbats and weigh less than one ounce.

The bumblebee bat of Thailand is the world’s smallest mammal.

The Bacardi symbol features a bat because the soil where the sugar cane (used to make the rum)grows is fertile from excessive guano, or bat droppings.

Bats can’t walk because their legs are too thin.

Bats always turn left when leaving a cave.

The common little brown bat of North America is, for its size, the world’s longest living mammal with lifespans sometimes exceeding 32 years.

Bats only mate while they are flying.

Baby bats (called pups) are born upside down and are caught by their mothers’ wings.

Bats are voracious eaters, devouring as many as 600 insects an hour through the night, every night. They can eat from one-half to three-quarters their own weight per evening."

And a human fact from the same page:

"Whispering is more wearing on your voice than a normal speaking tone. Whispering and shouting stretch the vocal chords."
