| Allow me to start off by mentioning that I have a license as a pharmacy technician. Keep in mind that's not a pharmacist. We go to school for about one year. I worked in the medical area as a pharmacy assistant and as a medical assistant for about ten years. I have better knowledge than average, but I am in NO way an expert. You should definately consult your doctor as suggested by a few others. If you can find a really good pharmacist, talk with them as well. Follow that advice first and foremost! With every medication you should always consider the benefits of taking it vs. the risk of side effects! ADs do occassionally have long term side effects. Almost every drug does. Liver damage is one possibility that comes to mind. ADs should probably only be taken short term, unless your medical need demands longer term. Everybody had different phisiology. I had some ADs that were just a nightmare. Paxil made me angry and agressive. Every movie I saw while on Zoloft I cannot remember. Other people swear by those drugs. Prozac was the one I did the best on. Initially it was for depression due to some bad things going on in my life (sick mom). I was put back on it for fibro-myalgia. I stopped taking it due to developing a liver problem (probably from acetaminiphen (Tylenol)) and discovering that it was causing me to have writers block. The Prozac was helpful for both conditions. I also develped a tolerance to Prozac and had to be put on higher and higher doses. A lot of ADs have the side effect of decreasing the libido. I've known a few people that actually got increased libidos from them. Again think phisiology. If you had a good sex drive just prior to being put on the drug, it is reasonable to think they MIGHT be the cause. ADs can be either a good thing, or a bad thing. They get prescribed in A LOT cases when the person can deal with the problem in other ways. Having said that, they are wonderful medications for the people that truly need them! You really need to talk to your doctor(s) about your concerns and get their input! If you have serious chronic depression you probably need to stay on them. Did you stop taking them because you were afraid of being dependant on them or some other reason? | |
