I just so have to disagree with you there... a forum of members who have something in common should not need to rely on the common factor being active to keep alive... I am a member of several boards (including a dutch Meat Loaf forum) that function very well even when said singer is in a less active period!
The members there treat each other with respect, and have found they have several other things in common with each other, which leads to stimulating (and sometimes not so stimulating) conversations on all kinds of topics.
The only real difference between those boards and this one is that the posts are more structured. If that were the case here you'd have a designated area for your JC, NJC and Junkish posts, rather than a general area to ditch everything...
I have to admit I rarely read/follow posts in more than 2 or 3 subfora or rooms on a forum... but the setup of the forum makes it easier to shift through the jokes, wordgames and spam... simply because you know where to find it (or ignore it) before you start reading...
Anyway... the fans make the forum, not the artist...??
