| I bought the Slash issue of Classic Rock, looking for the "Jim Steinman - Cult Hero" article. Since then Dr. Rock has informed me that the article I was looking for is only available online. However, there is a large feature article in the Slash issue called "The 30 Greatest Collaborations Ever". I'm not sure if you have seen it yet but I might as well type it up just in case. The top ten are: 1. Led Zepplin and Sandy Denny - Battle Of Evermore - 1971. 2. Cream and George Harrison - Badge - 1969. 3. Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen - Beat it - 1983. 4. Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen - Because the Night - 1978. 5. Alice In Chains And Elton John - Black Gives Way To Blue - 2009. 6. Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne - Close My Eyes Forever - 1988. 7. Meat Loaf and Cher - Dead Ringer For Love - 1981. 8. David Bowie and John Lennon - Fame - 1975. 9. Michael Jackson and Slash - Give In To Me - 1993. 10. Pantera and Kerry King - Goddamn Electirc - 2000. The write up for the "Dead Ringer" collaboration says: "Boy/girl duets are often soppy and tender affairs, but Cher and Meat Loaf defy those rules with aplomb on the up tempo "Dead Ringer".... The video for this Jim Steinman written anthem, featuring Meat and Cher flirting outrageously in Walt's Inn, a bar full of softball fans, has quite rightly passed into folklore. Who could forget Cher's portrayal of a dusky, gum-chewing, leather-clad harpie, or blame Meat for accepting her offer and grabbing his coat?" There is a picture of the album cover (the only one shown in the entire feature) and beside it is written the following: "Meat Loaf's second Jim Steinman produced album, "Dead Ringer", yielded a UK Top Five hit and a cracking collusion with Cher. But its origins lay in the score for a US sitcom based on "National Lampoon's Animal House". I think its possible that Conas is correct to say that Meat Loaf's voice was in good shape for the album. Classic Rock considers one of his performances on the "Dead Ringer" album to be in the top ten collaborations of all time. This article might be a good omen "if" they do a televised talent search. Cher would be a brilliant judge and surely she would agree to do it if it is Jim's show (please note that I said "if"). Any other suggestions for who would make a good judge? | |
