I agree that Bat III, WttN and CHSIB all have some individual songs that are better songs than anything on HCTB. In fact, I don't think HCTB has even one "great" song on it. For me, its a perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. I think HCTB is a more consistent, satisfying, end-to-end listen than those records. Especially w/ WttN and CHSIB, they really just kind of fall apart in the second half. (Bat III does a nice job of spreading the medicority and ho-hummery evenly throughout the album; props to Desmond for that ;)

I also agree that the lyrics are sometimes horrid, and not usually better than adequate. I'd say "Peace on Earth" has good lyrics. And "Song of Madness," just a textbook "Dungeons & Dragons" rocker. ("with lamb's blood we purchased our sins pardon!")

I do like the "desaturate" line from "Love is Not Real" that you mentioned in a previous post. I'm always in favor of trying to come up with lyrics that are unexpected, if not downright unheard of in general songwriting. And it does seem to fit the song.

And how about "next time you stab me in the back you better do it to my face?" Sounds like a line Jim would use, IMO. In fact, Meat's delivery of that line during the slow part of "Love Is Not Real," with the piano and the ominous minor chords, is probably the most Jimesque moment on the record.

But I digress...
