| Its very odd that "The Nutcracker" project was kept secret for so long and now it has been announced by a medical chap in Canada. Broadway World found out about it ages ago but they promised to keep it a secret in exchange for being the ones who could announce it first. And now a doctor has beat them to it. The secret almost got out when Kasim blogged about his "secret" project. I don't know if anyone else remembers that. At the moment some people are calling it "Nutz". Do you think that sounds better than "The Nutcracker"? Tremolor wrote: "Point taken, but I was going with the theory that the new version might contain lyrics. It's not that uncommom that classical instrumental songs are reused in rock or metal and get lyrics." Yes. Tremolor is right. Jim's contribution is mainly lyrics. The idea was originally Steve Leber's (the chap who used to manage AC/DC and Aerosmith). He asked Elva who could he get to write the lyrics and she said: "Oh, Jim Steinman would be perfect." She asked Jim and he was very excited. As soon as I heard about it, I thought it was a brilliant idea. Tchaikovsky meets Steinman. Wonderful. JD is right that Jim has made it quite dark, although in a funny kind of way. He wanted to make Drosselmeyer a murdering psycho but he has changed his mind and Drosselmyer will now be just very sinister. At about the same time, Steve Leber hired Steve Margoshes to do the arrangements (which are brilliant - he has made a massive musical contribution to the project). Although, I have to disagree with the Canadian doctor who said it was "heavy metal". Its a bit heavy in parts but its mostly rock and power ballads with some hip hop thrown in for break dance numbers. Sadly Steve Leber had to pull out of the show because of a few Frank Wildhorn shows but Elva and Steve Rinkoff are now producing it and a possible executive producer might be coming on board this week. There is a big meeting at Jim's to discuss it all, including Mandy Moore who will choreograph. I hear that the star of the show up in Ridgefield is Terry. I have always loved that guy, especially in "Life Of Brian" (which he also directed) and when I heard that not only was he on board as the book writer but that he might direct, I was thrilled. Jim says that Terry is one of his idols. It was Frances Perry who introduced Terry to Elva. He is a friend of her husband George (who is writing the official BOOH book). One cool thing that happened was when Terry was drinking with Ray Davies in their local Hamstead Heath pub and Terry told Ray that he was working with Jim Steinman. Ray replied: "I love Jim Steinman. He's a genius." Jim was very happy when he heard this because he is a fan of The Kinks. | |
