Dear Jim Steinman (bucket list redux)

(I know there was a bucket list conversation back in 2008. I'm late.)

Dear Jim Steinman:

I've heard rumors that you sometimes read the discussions boards here, so I'm going to throw this out as a one-in-a-million shot.

I was talking recently with a friend about our bucket lists. Mine was actually pretty short. I've been lucky enough-- or dispassionate enough, I don't know-- to be able to accomplish most of things I've wanted in life. I can look back at the things I wanted to do as a child and most of those don't mean as much to me any more, but there are still a few things I'd like to do as an adult, before I shuffle off this mortal coil. But still, I have traveled the world. I have skydived (sort of-- it was indoor, and actually not as thrilling as you'd think). I have been a radio DJ, and interviewed several of my heroes. I sang on stage with The Persuasions-- not my first choice of bands to sing second bass for, but still an honor. I have written a novel. I have seen my poetry published. My life is good.

Some of the items that remain to be done are prosaic. I want to get out of debt. (I'm almost there). One wish is gutter common: FMF. (I make no apologies.) Another may seem silly: to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women-- you know, the older I get, the less important that seems.

The last item on my list is the reason I am writing today. My final wish is to sing background on a Jim Steinman recording. I don't even want to be the star, let someone else carry that pressure. All I want is to harmonize the glorious oohs and ahhs and bang-a-diddy-wah-wahs alongside the Blend-O-Matics on a new Steinman song.

I know I'm not a great singer. I'm okay. As a bass-baritone, I honestly don't do rock well. I sound better in the lounge, like Scott Walker. I do a decent Gordon Lightfoot impression. Thank god for Peter Steele who gave deep-voiced men good, hard rock to sing along with-- him and Sleepy LaBeef. I wish I had the range and richness of James Grant or Liam McKahey.

So, Jim, how about it? All you have to do is let me know when you're next recording a single, and I can be there. I will travel to wherever at my own expense to do this. You don't even have to pay me-- I know the musicians' union won't be happy about that, but we'll work it out later. What do you say?

Thank you.
