| I didn't have to think hard about this: Getting So Excited by Bonnie Tyler from Faster Than the Speed of Night. Ugh. Where to even begin with this song? The chord progression is repetitive, the beat just makes you wanna sit down, and it just has this vaguely ugly sound. The whole production of the song is simply wrongheaded: it takes itself too seriously to be campy, but it's way too trashy to be taken seriously. Even within the album the song doesn't work; in fact, the album is much better without it, as then the two Steinman compositions can go together, uninterrupted by this garbage. It pains me to know that the title of not only my favorite Steinman song, but my favorite song in general came from this track. And every time I hear it here, I can't help but cringe. I guess if I have anything good thing to say about it, it's be that Bonnie's vocal performance is actually very good, as she does really sell the emotion of the song, but that's about it. Another song that comes to mind when think of this topic is Pandora's Box's (awkward spelling) cover of the Doors' Twentieth Century Fox (Box, Fox, rocks, a pox, drop your cocks, and grab your socks! - it's a fun game). Logically, I should hate this more, as it is a tarted-up cover of a song I have a lot of affection for, but at least TCF is fun! I know it's bad, but I enjoy it anyway; it's kind of like the musical equivalent of Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls. TCF is a guilty pleasure, GSE is just a bore. Anyone else have some venom for a Jim Steinman song? | |
