| Review Of Jim Book From Amazon: What we have here is the near-perfect short-read. Tim Quirk's analysis of Bat Out of Hell is long enough to thoroughly break down the subject matter, but short enough to remain fun. Works of musical scholarship, like those on graphic novels, often try so hard to be erudite and intellectual that they turn an exciting subject matter into the driest, most brain-numbingly boring subject since `Tort Law & Practices, Connecticut, 1781 - 1795.' Mr. Quirk does not have this problem. His views are discerning without becoming overly-complicated or convoluted. They are insightful and illuminating, and still fun at the same time. Breaking the discussion of the album into four parts (and a coda!), he explores all the things that are wonderful about it, as well as all the things that are not. His quibbles are realistic, but minor. His love for the album, though possibly tempered with age, is still obvious. | |
