That's a good idea, considering how I've always felt BfG and Dead Ringer are two different takes on the same album. They have the same story: Boy is bad ass. Boy gets girl. Boy and Girl have troubles. Their fate is unknown because both end with an 'epilogue.' Theme One: The "I'm a Bad-Ass" Song. BfG: Bad for Good. A classic. Dead Ringer: Peel Out. It started out with interestingly, but I think the song is pretty boring. Theme Two: Let's have some Sex. BfG: Lost Boys and Golden Girls, Stark Raving Love, Out of the Frying Pan (And into the Fire) and Surf's Up. Three songs, great in their own right, continue the part of BfG's story where the girl and boy have sex, each song being a different time. Dead Ringer: I'm Gonna Love Her for Both of Us. Okay, not so much sex here until after the song ends, but there is sex there. Theme Three: Let's Remake 'Paradise By the Dashboard Light.' BfG: Dance in My Pants. I hate this song. So does everyone else. Dead Ringer: Dead Ringer for Love. I love this song. It's got a great tempo, and the lyrics are much better than Dance in My Pants's. Theme Four: The Affair Song. BfG: Left in the Dark. A incredibly emotional, powerful, sad song about Boy wondering why Girl cheated on him. Dead Ringer: More than You Deserve. Another incredibly emotional, powerful but this time angry song about Boy and his Girl's affair, only this time he blames his friend for it. Theme Five: Epilogue. Neither of these songs really continue the story, but they do sum up the feel of the album. BfG: Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through. A fine song, but suffers from an awful production and less than powerful voice. Dead Ringer: Everything is Permitted. A song I'd always interpreted as Boy justifying cheating on whory girl with Girl from Bar. But is boring as sin. Definitely Jim's worst song, next to If it Ain't Broke. Of course, this interpretation leaves out 'Read 'Em and Weep,' and 'I'll Kill You if Don't Come Back,' from Dead Ringer, 'The Storm,' from BfG, and the spoken bits from both. Anyway, I apologize if this doesn't make much sense, never really one for doing that. | |
