I'm not sure how old you are, but I came in with Bat 2, although I had no idea really who Jim was, although I knew "Songs by Jim Steinman", which was on both the albums. While I didn't know what it was like from the point of view where you were waiting for Jim's next big project, I certainly remember how big the album and single was at that time, and seeing the video for "Objects in the rear view mirror" for example on Video Hits (Aussies will remember this show lol) when I was about 8 or 9. It was just massive. Bat 2 seemed to be everywhere, completely different to last year when Braver came out for example. It was a different time. They were getting a lot of promo, and you were seeing him on TV in ads and promo. And people just in general would be talking about what it was like compared to the original. For me specifically I was in awe of the imagery on the front cover and all throughout the CD, if you opened it up. Most of the lyrics being accompanied with art, like "I'd do anything for love", which were also used for the singles, and then also wondering why "It just won't quit" for example didn't have any. There was also a special tour edition, which I later got on Ebay, that I remember seeing around that time as well, where they changed the colour of the sky so it was grey. It was just a very exciting time. Also, this was before the internet, so often you didn't even know... Like I just walked into the music store one day and I get hit with the cover art for "Very Best of..." and there's three new songs I don't even recognize. That was like wow. I remember being literally scared to leave the store, in case someone would snap it up before I could ask if we could reserve it or something. I got that copy for Christmas that year. When I heard those songs, I made the connection with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and subsequently musicals in general. Jim introduced me to musical theatre. | |
