Hey Andrew,
I'm not Susan, so I'm good for only one Jim...
Alot of celebrities/musicians have 'official' fansites and the blogs anymore seem to be the best way for them to communicate with their fans. Brian May and Ian Hunter both have wonderful blogs on their sites. Brian had a devil of a time a while back with myspace having someone on claiming to be him--the only way he could get the person to stop, he was told be the website, was to open his own myspace account!! He was mad as hell about the loophole as his wife was also a myspace-identity victim--I have no idea how it came out. But as a rule of thumb, most celebs don't post to mailing lists under their own names which is why I question whether 'Bob Saget' is legit.
Years back, groups had fanclubs and the big communiques were the annual Christmas letter and maybe something between. Websites have pretty much replaced snail mail like everything else.
Cheers!
Leesa
