Growing up I didn't like to eat meatloaf. All the meatloaf I'd seen was dry, and hard to chew because it was dry. Hard to chew, hard to swallow, and that was it, I decided, that I didn't like meatloaf. What was meatloaf, but a slab of meat mixed with some other stuff that made the slab of meat stick together, baked to a temperature that would turn it into a brick, ans served with what, ketchup on top of it. Yech. Boring, awful meatloaf. Luckily, it was not made with any amount of frequency in my home. I had to eat out most of the time after my mother remarried. And I ate at someone else's house where their mother had this kind of obsession with tenderloin steaks. Depending upon whose friend I ate at, I either had tenderloin if at this one, or porterhouse, if at the other one. Either way, I didn't have to eat meatloaf. Then one day my stepfather came to me and declared that I had to start eating at home. He declared that he was retiring and was going to take on the task of cooking for the family. And he thought I might be thrilled, this being 1974/1975, that he was going to cook the dish he most liked to cook of all dishes he knew. Meatloaf. I said I don't like meatloaf, I can't eat meatloaf. "oh you'll like THIS meatloaf, I'll make it interesting, you'll see, you'll like it". I asked, what if I don't, and he said if I don't, then I won't eat. Hmmmmm. Have to eat at home, have to eat meatloaf. Wasn't life grand. He put all kinds of things into these slabs of meat, like onions, potatoes, tomatoes, string beans, and heaven knows what, and thank heaven, at least there was something to break up the brick. But every day for a year he cooked, and every day for a year he cooked meatloaf. So I just want to say, that although I do sometimes vie for the occasional frozen meatloaf dinners, and even manage to cook my own tolerable meatloaf in the microwave, I am really, really sick, of meatloaf. > | |
