Well I think they were always intended for a WDTW concept album, not a Meat/Jim project, so they weren't exactly 'wasted'.
I think that whole episode was a trade-off. ALW wanted Meat on the WDTW concept album and Meat wanted something new (from Steinman) for his greatest hits album (to maximise it's sales).
I don't think Meat would have received any new Steinman material (for any project) if he hadn't done the WDTW album, as Jim would probably have been 'too busy'?
It's interesting to note that I think Meat recorded NMW with the intention that it would be the WDTW single or at least the only version on the album. Somewhere a long the way Jim and/or ALW decided differently.
You could argue that the production/arrangement on Meat's version was superior (which it is), but then the Boyzone version sold tons and did what ALW wanted, in terms of promoting the show.
