| I've kinda touched on this a few times before, but Meat's SU is probably my favourite of all his attempts at a Steinsong without Jim being present. It's sufficiently different from the original to be worthwhile (actually something that too many of the covers on Bat 2 didn't achieve) and it subscribes to Jim's ethos of using the piano as a percussion instrument perfectly. The arrangement seemed cluttered to me when I first heard the album (and I should say, I heard this version before I heard Rory's on BFG) but the more I listen to it, the more I realised it's actually the production that's a bit woolly (Meat's vocals are buried too low in the mix at certain points) and the arrangement is actually pretty good. I guess it shows that Jim's songs can withstand different treatments and still shine through, and I love the way the band give it a real good kicking compared to the beautiful, delicate version on BFG. I stuck it in my fantasy Meat Loaf set in the thread below because I'd love to have heard Meat doing this version live back when he had the voice to do it justice. As Jim might say, that would have been "really cool". | |
