Thanks for posting the article. It was very interesting. How much did DOTV lose? I can't see how Spiderman even hoped to break even with such a huge budget and running costs. Especially with it being housed in a fairly small theatre. Maybe if it was a hit the size of Phantom but what are the chances of that happening? Now it looks like it will not even open. I feel sorry for all the people with the lower down jobs not getting paid. I have been hearing negative rumours about Spiderman for months but I didn't realise the situation was so dire until I read the article you posted. I can remember when Bono and The Edge wrote the music for Clockwork Orange: The Musical, a long time back (I think it was about twenty years ago - maybe someone else can remember). It was produced at the Barbican but was so hated that it never got its planned transfer to a West End theatre. They got most of the criticism for that show but this time it doesn't sound like its their fault. I think Bono and The Edge write great rock songs but they are not really capable of writing great theatrical songs. Thank goodness that Jim's songs are much more suitable for theatre. I don't think the problem with DOTV was the music. | |
