| I posted the first chorus to this a while back, when we were throwing out ideas for "Steinmanesque" song titles. JD asked me then if there was any more to it. There wasn't. Now there is. There’s No Time Like the Past Boy: Do you remember the time? Our very first time. God, it seems so far away. And do you remember that time It was all I could do To keep myself from backhanding you? Of course you do It was only yesterday Back then, back then Back then we may as well have been immortal Those days we really thought we knew it all In pride we thought our stars aligned forever Too young to know its pride that always goes before a fall There’s no time like the past For you and I to part There’s no time like the past To go our separate ways If we could have called it quits back then We would have salvaged both our hearts But now the present’s wrapped around us And we’ve overplayed our parts And the future holds no promise save declining numbered days Girl: Do you remember those nights After basketball games? So young, so restless, so… First I was cheering, then moaning your name These days I just curse it Nasty and violent, the neighbors have heard it I’m sure you’ll recall It was just a week ago Back then, back then Back then we thought our lives were writ in starlight That fairy tale lovers read of us in awe We guessed our nights of love and lust were endless Now those kisses haunt like wishes made upon a monkey’s paw There’s no time like the past To nip us in the bud There’s no time like the past To break us quick and clean If we’d only had the sense back then We could have saved sweat, tears and blood But the only sound our hearts make now Is the proverbial sickening thud And I pray that I can slip beneath the police tape at the scene. Both: If only we weren’t so far removed From a saving second thought What good is all we had before When it leads to what we’ve got? Maybe we just delayed the crash The day that our paths crossed. What value are those wondrous times When you tally up the cost? They say the thrill is in the journey So go on, give the wheel a spin. But who could choose to play this game Knowing just how hard it ends? There’s no time like the past For you and I to part There’s no time like the past To go our separate ways If we could have called it quits back then We would have salvaged both our hearts But now the present’s wrapped around us And we’ve overplayed our parts And the future holds no promise save declining numbered days | |
