Thanks for commenting on this. I would have missed it otherwise. I want to agree with you because, well, I'd like to see Meat a success and I almost always defer to your judgment on these aesthetic matters, but at first listen, I'm not sure I can agree. Plus I'm in the mood to bash the hell out of something. So here's my first impression:

James Michael's version is all about edgy socal slackerdom and lyrics that celebrate it. Meat oversings in his southern trash blues style, which is almost right for the song, but not quite. It sounds like Meat is trying to hard, which is not the attitude of the song. His age and image make the song less a dark celebration of a twisted lifestyle and more a sick and sad confession from a dirty pathetic old man. It's almost like watching him grope Aspen Miller on stage, but worse.

The original was phrased like a coffee shop poem reading with band in tow. James Michael's vocals even seemed to emphasize words like punch lines more, which is appropriate for the grimy hip scene I associate with the song.

Here's what I think is interesting: The song is definitely not a Bat song. It's anti-Romantic and anti-heroic.

Interestingly enough, I think the production should have been more low-budget and less polished and, I agree, the video looks (intentionally) cheap and retro in a way that almost works with the song, but doesn't. It's definitely not a Bat video!

If Meat told Steinman he wasn't going to try to make another Bat record without the Maestro, it looks like he kept his word. This really is a different direction for Meat.
