According to Jim it's a combination of all those things; alchemically transmuting the piano into the pounding heart of his songs.
I think he said he always uses a Yamaha grand piano and of course remembers that a piano is a percussive as well as a melodic instrument. Having Roy Bittan and Steve Margoshes playing can't hurt either ;)
I remember on his blog he said it was one of the things missing from TMIL - Piano Thunder (such a great expression!).
