| I've listened three times through today and I don't think I can bear anymore. First off Meat sounds great (best in years) but the positives stop there. The main problem are the songs. A couple are mediocre; Elvis in Vegas (a Bon Jovi throwaway?), If I Can't Have You (Kara sounds like she's on helium) & If It Rains, but the rest are horrid. Song of Madness is a poor attempt at early Queen and/or Iron Maiden, California & Love Is Not Real wouldn't make Darkness b-sides, Running Away From Me (urgh), and a Jessica Simpson cover (WTF!). In fact I don't think I like anything. Whoever was in charge of quality control (Meat?) has dropped the ball big time. The lyrics are also very poor & too many to list, but these three lines stand-out: 'When we look at what we're going through and desaturate' "If history is violence and sex, I'd rather not pay my respects' "Let's go upstairs until we've both had enough' From watching the Meat videos he did during recording it seems that they called in (any old) writers to Rob Cavallo's house to try & churn something out over a few days, and most of the songs sound just like that (2 or 3 different ideas cobbled together). There seems no effort or craft to most of the writing? The production is top notch but the arrangements (Cavallo & Meat?) seem pretty generic. No real hooks, hardly any piano (thunder) and far too many (widdly widdly) guitar parts. I would say this is Meat's worse album (song wise). Sorry Meat if you're reading but give Jim or Paul Jacobs a call next time. | |
