Yesterday I launched another weather balloon payload into "near space", and got some of my best photos yet. Click the big pic for more.![]() The plan was for the payload to land near Haywards Heath in Sussex, but we didn't have quite enough helium in the cylinder meaning that the balloon got carried too far south. It was touch and go if it would touchdown on land on water, and in the event it splashed down nearly half a mile out to sea! We were close behind in the chase car, and the payload was still transmitting its location when we got there. We thought about what to do (like, where to find a boat) but then we could see on the live map that the payload was slowly floating back towards land! It was just after low tide and the wind was coming in strongly from the see, bringing the payload directlytowards where we were parked! So we just had to wait, and decided to go and get some fish & chips while we did :-). Here's a screenshot showing the actual path back to where it eventually washed up nearly 2 hours after splashdown! | |
