| Like many of you, I was severely disappointed with Bat Out of Hell III. More than that, it really pissed me off! If anyone had even looked at me wrong on the day I listened to Bat III, lasers would have shot out of my eyes and fried their ass! But, over the years my hatred for it has somewhat subsided. Subsequent listening to both the album, and the individual songs have given me a more forgiving perspective on it (because there actually are more good songs than bad), but have also made clear the album's big problems: 1. The album contains too many bad songs. Yeah, I know, duh. But this problem goes deeper than just a few bad songs, they actually make the other song suck by association. The entire album is slightly ruined from the get-go by the terrible title track, and the awesomeness that is Bad for Good is spoiled by its seguing into the insiped Diane Warren-ballad Cry Over Me, ect. 2. The album is way too long. This might ring as weird complaint. After all, Bat III is actually a few minutes shorter than Bat II. However, Bat II never felt long, it goes by quick. With Bat III, on the other hand, you feel like your life is flashing before your eyes as you listen to it. 3. The album is way too LOUD! Again, another weird complaint. As we all know, Jim Steinman likes his music like he likes his life: everything louder than everything else. But, Steinman's music is loud in much the same way as Phil Spector's: it's a wall of sound, more big than loud. Bat III's screeching nu-metal guitars and thunderous basses actually give you a headache. 4. The album is badly sequenced. This one is harder to explain. The songs just seem to be placed in just the right order to make the problems I listed ten times worse! So recently I attempted to create a new version of the album which rectifies these issues. I cut out the bad songs (which helped problems 1 and 2), and put the songs in a new order (which remedied problems 3 & 4). To my happy surprise, I really liked what I came up with. It went by like lightning, and I enjoyed every second of it. Here's the track list of my version: 1. Seize the Night 2. It's All Coming Back to Me Now 3. If It Ain't Broke, Break It 4. Blind As a Bat 5. Cry to Heaven 6. In the Land of the Pig, the Butcher Is King 7. What About Love* 8. The Future Ain't What It Used to Be** 9. Bad for Good * - Yeah, I know What About Love isn't the greatest song in the universe, but I like it. What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good love song, and Meat and Patti's performances on it are phenomenal. ** - Add 15 seconds to the end of the song. I ask my fellow Steinfans and Meatheads to give my version a shot, if you like it better, yay! And if not, feel free to come back here and tell me how much of an idiot I am (I won't mind). | |
