I might have gotten things a little mixed up over > time. Anyone else heard this before? > > > I don't have the impression that any libelous risk is around this topic, due to the fact that what you have described is part and parcel of doings and goings on in the recording industry. Crosby made clear she was paid for the vocal performance on the demo, by saying she did not get paid "extra" for the final mix. What I do understand in my own impression that it was she who backed away from the management by Jim, and what work they did together during her association with him was owned by him and compensated for by him so that he had rights to use her vocals in a mix. It would have been different if she were a main vocal on her own marketed work...in which case, the label would pay her a percentage of the sales by contract. In the recording industry, there is piece-work (once in the can, the performance has been paid for and the obligation fulfilled), or there is contract work, unless one is specking and volunteering. "Specking" is a word I learned from Jim. It means in anticipation of a future financial compensation if the market should bear out. Crosby states she was paid, not specked. So, I don't see any issues, and since you asked her about what money she made (an entirely impolite thing to do, IMHO) she answered the most vaguely she could. Unless you were her confidant of the moment, ooo la la.......kiss and tell? | |
