I seem to recall an interview with Meat, where he said that they had a deal with Melissa Etheridge. Then, they kept waiting and waiting for her to have the opportunity to record the vocals, so in the end they used the Lorraine's vocals from the demo for the final mix.
Something along those lines. I don't have a source for this, nor am I going to Google it at the moment.
