Andrew Lloyd Webber was on the top of the world at the time. It didn't matter *who* he collaborated with, it was going to be a hit. He just had "Cats", "Song & Dance" and "Starlight Express", all major hits in London. Because of Phantom's popularity as a movie, it probably would have succeeded no matter who the lyricist was. Depends which version you're familiar with. "The Complete Work" and the Bremen show is totally insane. The Broadway version was watered down because they were afraid of putting in too many horror/gore sequences. It could have been one of the first "blood & guts" shows on Broadway, despite the music. The two Vampire musicals that followed Lestat > and Dracula were complete boring drivel. "Dracula" and "Lestat", in their Broadway mountings, were awful. Any show that has only three synthesizers in the pit and Dracula flying across stage horizontally has got to be stupid. IMO. "Lestat", well... Based on the "Bad For Good" videos, it could have been one of the strangest, screwed-up cult films of all time. Like "Rocky Horror Show" meets something out of "Clockwork Orange". | |
