For a movie to make a profit it must gross... I believe... 150% of its budget.... maybe more. This covers costs of distribution and promotion which are not part of the film's budget... Thus, in America the film lost money... I believe it might have fared better if it was treated more like the musical...but even if not... I would rather see a faithful adaptation of a musical put down on film for posterity...
