Why did Jim become a virtual recluse?

I'm in the process of cleaning up the old Nassau Coliseum bootleg (which I wish I hadn't started!) and I can't help but notice how comfortable Jim seems to be performing on stage, even with his pretentious attempts at humour. I know he quit the Neverland Express to focus on writing songs and that he subsequently had a big bust up with Meat, but why did he almost never appear on stage after this gig (with someone other than Meat perhaps)? I think the Hudson Theater shows are the only other time he really featured in a show and by then his voice was worse than Meat's.
