| I think Meat's rendition destroys Barry's. And I know, Jim wholly produced Barry's, and on Meat's he maybe had his fingers in the pie of the basic tracks, maybe not even that. I agree with everyone who says Barry's vocals are cold, emotionless, robotic, uninspiring, whatever... But I found that even the production that Jim did for Barry was bland by Jim's standards. I've honestly only listened to it maybe, oh, 8 or 9 times in 15 years or so, that's how much it moved me. Or didn't. I don't have it handy right now to brush up on it, but my best recollection is that the whole thing left me with a feeling akin to blue balls; I kept waiting for it to "Steinman Up," the anticipation mounting more and more as the song rolls on, waiting for... something, anything... something Steinmany, and then it never really came. As I didn't :) Maybe Jim just couldn't pull what he needed out of Barry, so he didn't bother pushing for something that wasn't there. But as for Meat's version - I think its one of his best vocals on Dead Ringer (which I know is arguably not saying much.) I really enjoy Meat's deeper register on this song, and I think his voice is genuinely good throughout, up until it starts to crack a bit on the "For all the hours we'll be spending alone..." bit toward the end. Oh, and as to the new verse in Barry's version... It had always sort of rankled me that Jim repeated a verse in Meat's version. It struck me as laziness, like, can you really not come up with one more lousy verse? But then, for Barry, it seems Jim just went and came up with one more lousy verse. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I'm not fond of the extra verse Jim wrote for Barry's version. Its always felt to me like Jim just decided he needed another verse and rushed one out, the first passable stanza he could come up with. Its not bad, really, but it just seems very rote by Jim's standards, and doesn't really add much to the song. > > > > > > As for Barry's, I'm about to hear it now.
