| Well, the Neverland Express were great, easily the best incarnation I've seen in the flesh and they really made Jim's music come alive. Meat, and it saddens me to say this, was pretty shocking. At times badly off key, inaudible for long periods and quite frankly I don't have a fucking clue what he was singing during "Took the Words" but it certainly wasn't the song I know and love. The show as a spectacle was excellent of course, but I just couldn't believe the state of his voice. I just felt sad for most of it and I almost wish I hadn't gone, and hadn't witnessed it. We were sat half way down the main stand (unfortunately a little too close to the bar as there seemed to be a scramble for it at various points of the concert which was frustrating as it distracted from the excellent light show) and at one point 2 guys came past in their Meat Loaf tee-shirts, one turned to the other & remarked "fucking hell - his voice sounds even worse from here!" There were some redeeming moments vocally - for some reason he always seems to do a decent job on "Bat...", and "Land of the Pigs" was at least in tune. If anyone's interested, I'll try to post up a song by song review later and maybe what the local press have to say about it tonight (I shudder to think, given all the build they've been giving the show since it was announced). Ah, well - I suppose everyone loses it eventually. :-( | |
