Here is a thing that I have been thinking of when someone says something like this but I have not actually come up with the analogy that could fit it. However, now that I have, it is "playroom". When I was in nursery (pre-school) school especially, and also kindergarten, the children were left ostensibly to themselves with the various toys and craft supplies, to make a day of play and interaction amongst themselves. The children had to be there, and there was the level of discipline that came when a child acted out or did not behave socially. If a child was bored, of course behaviors were associated with that as well. The reason why this seems like a playroom is because some people seem to think like they have to be here, even when they state indirectly or directly that there isn't any reason to be here. Children in pre-school and kindergarten don't usually have social avenues after school, or between school days with the children they are in school with, so if they were to be able to choose, on the criteria of their friendships, to be in the playroom on a rainy sunday, then they may do that if only because their friends are there, and bored out of their minds, they would have those irritable behaviors. But, on the internet, there are numerous avenues for outside communications to be in touch with friends. There is email, telephone, instant messaging, group chats, and all that exists, either in text mode, in rich-text mode, html, and even in multimedia collaboration sites. So, if one is attached to having interaction with a friend, one can check in with their friend and see about the news or shares of the day, while they wait for a reason to come back to the fan site. If they come back to the fan site and there is nothing of interest for them there while they are there, and they say that they act out because there is nothing of interest for them while they are there, why blame the artist of whom they are a fan? Why blame the site administrator? Why blame anyone, including someone like me, at all? Why not find the interests that also comprise your life and include them in the interests while interacting with friends. In any land-based community, there is more than only one place where people meet. They don't meet at the church when there isn't a function going on at the church but they want to see each other. When they want to see each other and there is nothing going on at the church they go some other place, like the coffee shop, scrabble tournament, or they see a show playing nearby. They don't call up the reverend and say, hey reverend, you give us nothing to do today, so we are going to see what colors to paint your fence! I have not seen enough fan sites to really know what is different from them to this one, but he ones I have seen do appear to be much different. I see that people post when there is something to post, and when there is not, they are not posting. They seem to have diverse enough interests and sufficiency in their internet activities to go where they want to go when there is a reason for going there, and not to be there when there is not. All I am saying is, that just because there is no new news from Jim, or any of the array of activities of his own children, being his songs, does not mean that the fans need to act like children themselves and be where they have no reason to be, if they will be blameful and disruptive when they personally themselves don't feel there is a reason for being there. If your land-based life is boredom filled, does that mean that you perform mischief on it, or do you try to find ways to occupy yourself in an interesting way? The natives are not locked into this vessel, this port. They can move about, they can investigate the landscapes and then come back with refreshed minds for their activities here, instead of being pre-occupied with what trivialities exist that they have no interest in. In other words, if the natives are restless, what are they stuck on being on this page for? I don't really know, because the site for a songwriter is definitely a different kind of dynamic than the site of a band like KISS, where there are songs and boxed sets and tours to go around, and I don't know because I don't regularly go to fan sites, not even Meatloaf's, and yet, fans could in themselves have a sociological phenomenon that creates a certain kind of beast quality in a group mind. The thing that seems to be the most disruptive in a fan board or any group is when some members find favoritism in face-to-face experiences with the other members, and so the internet is a vehicle for those to manifest those friendships they don't otherwise have the courage to pursue off of the fan board, and so they mingle, they linger, they even feel like because they are friends, they have a reason for being here. And then they blame the board for its not providing the forum of entertainment. It seems to me like there is the friendship hungry participants who use the board for their un-threatening place to stay with their friends they meet on trips, and there is the friendship hungry participants who do not meet the others on trips but who find that the others are so much like friends that they find their social outlet here. A fan community is not really able to fulfill all of those requirements without some major understandings that there must be peace amongst those who are dwelling, and that it is not the responsibility of the board host to entertain them. Some boards have fans who start NJC threads that go on and on, with games and activities. I don't know what I think of those per se, but I do know that these fans take their playroom, and make a happy playroom of part of it, and don't feel restless. > > Therefore, and it is entirely their prerogative, it could > a be good time for Rink and/or Jim to give a few updates > (I'm starting to sound like a stuck record)? As I am saying, it is for Rink and/or Jim to do what they must do for their projects, and not worry so much about whether or not this board is entertained in between their readiness to present them.
