When Bat was released there was very little airplay what turned a lot of people on to it was this 200 pound plus guy belting out these bombastic songs. When this album was released glam rock had ended, disco was in full swing the Punk scene was just beginning not only did this album defy the current music trends of the day it went on to sell 50 odd million copies the question is why. And quite simple it is because of the individual performing the songs. You can have the best written songs in the world if you don’t have someone who can perform them what do you have nothing but great songs. You have to have someone who can bring them to life and Meat with his presence did that to Jim’s Music better than anyone. There are hundred and thousands of singers who can probably sing better than Meat Stick them in a studio and they will probably sound fantastic but are they marketable Can they go out on a stage and perform can they sell the music to the masses Meat Loaf could. 30 years on his voice no longer what it was yet he is still filling venues around the world why because people go to see him perform. You don’t last 30 years in the music business with out being able to perform. Pandora’s box great album great songs but whom outside the realms of Steinman/Loaf/Tyler fans has the album. How many people do you know that fall out of this distinction own a copy in their record collection? Now all the artist great singers fantastic voices great songs but not enough to make it a hit album, Why? Same with Bad for good, my second favourite album brilliant songs but not a commercial success once again Why? What has allowed Jim to do what he has over the years and what has allowed Meat to do what he has over the years is the coming together of the pair of them. Jim the writer Meat Loaf the performer what you hear of Jim today was born from the success of that union the same with Meat loaf They are both living of that success 30 years later and why not. They both market themselves one as the writer the other as the performer Larger than life songs require a larger than life performer. | |
