| Chameleon is a good way to put it, for some of his work. There are some things that are recognizable as Desmond's style, but he fits those things in with the sound of an artist. For some of his work, he gives the artist's incomplete work the polish it needs to become the sort of thing that sounds like it could be heard on the radio, but still sounds reasonably convincing as a song from Artist X. On the other hand, Desmond also seems to leave a trail of resentful fans who wish their artist's original sound had not gotten the distinctive Desmond polish. I've heard of fans of Aerosmith, KISS, Bon Jovi and others who felt this way. With Steinman's writing, I think some artists are put in a situation where they have to either not work with Steinman, or end up with something that does not fit in with the rest of their output. Unless, of course, the performer did not have much of a pop music career going before Steinman came along. Then it's a non-issue. A performer who is fresh-meat has definite advantages. The fitting-in thing might explain why those in control of Westlife rejected Steinman's remix of Total Eclipse. It sometimes seems like Westlife exists for the purpose of offering you something that's a little worse than what you already have. | |
