| Thought about this a lot lately. If Meat hadn't developed his much documented vocal problems after "Bat...", what sort of career would he and Jim had together? Jim has said in the past that he would have happily written specifically for Meat and used him as the main interpreter of his songs were it not for the problems around the time of "Bad For Good"/"Dead Ringer". So, what would we have had that we don't have now? An album called "Renegade Angel" sometime around 1979/80? Presumably this would have included a lot of the songs from "Bad For Good", maybe a couple from "Dead Ringer", but what else? Jim said in the book Phenomenology of Excess that he envisioned the whole album being tied together with spoken word pieces (either he or Sandy Robertson described it as sub-Dragnet stayle narration), but was unclear as to whether or not he'd actually written those pieces. Knowing Jim, they were probably a 'work in progress'. But what would have happened after that? Presumably Jim would still have wanted to work with other artists, so we might still have had the Bonnie Tyler collaboration...but then, Jim did describe himself as being "gun-shy" after "Bad For Good", and not wanting to create an entire album of his own work until he got the urge to make "Original Sin". Hence the dalliances with Donna Summer & Diana Ross. If "Renegade Angel" had been a hit, we might never have had a "Bat...2" in any form, but we might have had a steady stream of Meat/Jim albums over the next 20 years instead. Would Jim have been able to cope with the demands of writing entire albums on demand or would he have gone down the route of writing a few songs and hand-picking the 'fillers', like he did with Bonnie? Or would the discipline of having to write new material been good for him and lead to a more prolific Steinman than the one we know and (patiently) love? I'm aware that this post contains far too many 'what ifs...?' and rhetorical questions, but I figured I might as well try to talk about Jim Steinman. Who knows, it might catch on... ;-) | |
