| I'm not sure a casting show would bea good idea at all. Obviously the publicity would be a good thing, but I do feel Smeg is right: the show becomes a "product", as opposed to a work of art. You can't underestimate the power of the TV company, especially as Jim doesn't have the clout that ALW does. With the current climate around phone-in rip offs, the BBC (or whomever) may well insist on the public vote being final quite early on in the show, and not let Jim manipulate the ending he wants. Also, I'm totally and utterly fed up with the sort of clones you get on these reality shows. Female singers who can't sing one note when 20 can be crowbarred in there, insipid male singers who all want to be the next Westlife or James Blunt. And some of the acting on the ALW shows has been rather cringeworthy - big doe eyes to convey emotion (works well in a TV studio - not so well in a theatre), "jazz hands" on the uptempo numbers (I have a vision of some blonde Joseph wannabee jazz-handing his way through Bat Out Of Hell!), and huge, cheesy smiles for anything they're not sure about. All in all, I think it's another academic arguement because, even if Jim wanted to do it, I can't see primetime giving up a slice of Saturday night for him. They might just do it if Jim was in the background and ALW was picking the acts - but do we really want to see Jim giving up control on another project?
