[Those carefully avoiding the answer of my posts, I know you lurk. Those with snide comments, I know you shall be snide. Anyone else, I invite to a happy discussion.] Songwriters in singing their own songs, whether in good or not-so-good voice, has always been the pinnacle of respect in my opinion, because they put it on the line for their music. Even though Jim did not sing most of his songs, those that he has sung, are so much greater dimensioned to me than the others. When someone sings, (those of you who do sing will relate with this) their highest level of vulnerability is sometimes the way they feel about others' opinions of their voices. A singer could be as good as any of the Three Tenors, and yet screech on purpose in front of those who might judge, for fear of the real opinion coming forth. They'd be virtual daredevils in all other aspects of their lives, but for that. If you've experienced that as a singer, then you know how much nerve it takes to get out there and sing......your songs, or the songs of others' compositions. One reason why I don't criticize singers' qualities is because I feel that I do not want to be the one to drop the salt into that vulnerable place. Professional or not, the reason many singers sing is not because they think they are the second great wonder of the world, but because the singing gives them joy. Some singers feel like there is no higher pleasure other than sex. When Jim sings his songs, his performance levels vary with numerous factors. When someone mistakes another singer for him, wherever the mistake began, do you think it to be good news to find Jim as the vocalist, after all? When someone wants to pay homage to Rory Dodd, why not explain this unexplained fascination? Rory is a male soprano, not a falsetto. Anyone want to discuss singing technicality with me? If you know more than I do, which is not the greatest unlikelihood, then we could have a lively educational discussion. Anyway, I love it when Jim sings his songs. Don't you? | |
