Whether you think of the SW movie as a good version or not, compared to Ms. Lansbury on Broadway, for example, it certainly did one thing: It took the material to the screen in a way that IMO could hardly have been done better.
There are different expectations for shows and movies, and Burton did a good job with the changes he made.
I think if you went on from the original DOTV demo versions, and shorten the script to about 90 mins, it could work in the same way. TDV has the same dark, romantic/erotic and yet funny quality Sweeney Todd had and has.
