| It probably will not take to long before this thread gets hijacked and lost in the oblivion of the factless crap that some decide to rant on a regular basis. I decided earlier in the year after seeing Meat at Wembley that unless something special came up this would be my last Meat concert. Not because I didn’t enjoy the concert I did, but because I wanted to remember him for the many shows I had seen in the past. As I look back on time I remember the thrill as a young 14 year old in the late seventies seeing my first ever concert. 29 years later the memories of that concert are a distant blur but I remember the buzz and the excitement as if it was yesterday. If I knew at the time my musical tastes would for ever be moulded on that sound I heard that night I would have some how tried to have etched that night forever to fore front of my memories. But things don’t become life defining moments until later on in life and you look back and put significance to the occasion. The concerts I remember most fondly are the ones of the early eighties more in particular the tours around the release of Dead ringer. The concerts were not long by any means there was none of the fancy pyrotechnics you get today. But what I remember is the sheer energy and power of the performances. The stand out always being Bat out of hell. He always used to start with this in the old days walking out on to a darken stage no gimmicks just standing there the crown going wild while the intro to Bat played what seemed like hours. As well as being blessed with a powerful voice, great songs he was also blessed with having a magical stage presence that not many artist have. Bowie had it so did Mercury but very few artists do. That’s what I want to remember. One thing that always strikes me is how very few covers there has ever been of songs from the 2 bat albums and Dead ringer but more in particular Bat out of hell. This is one of the biggest selling albums of all times yet there have been so few covers These are great songs, ok I’m biased but I think there is one good reason for this and one reason only. The songs are just too big. To carry of a Steinman song. You have to be larger than life. You have to have a presence you have to have a voice and nobody fits that bill for Steinman songs better than Meat Loaf. Sure there have been great individual recordings of Jim songs, Bonnie Tyler is the only one that has come the closest to capturing the essence of what is a Steinman song on a larger scale but she has a unique voice that also blends well to Jims Music. So how come a great song writer as Jim Steinman is has there not been a fully penned Steinman album by any other individual artist? (except for Jims Bad for good) There maybe a good reason for this but I believe there is only one reason and that is there is only ever been one artist big enough to portray Wagnerian Rock in this manner and that is Meat Loaf. So to the fools out there who write crap about Meats pending death and demise which by the way is so easy to do when someone is over 60 and has already lived around two thirds of their life. Yes death is sometime around the corner. I say one thing Show some respect and remember though we are on this website because of our love for the works of Jim Steinman the lyrical genius that he is. And yes it is true to say with out Jim Steinman There would never have been a Bat out of hell. But would any of us be hear today if there had not been a certain Meat Loaf to portray these great songs? Would Bat out of hell ever been written? Would rockman ever exist? My defining musical moment was a concert in 1978, I believe Jims and Meats were meeting each other and because of that defining moment we have all the great songs that we have today.
